Choose the number pattern rules worksheet for Grade 1

A Grade 1 multiple-choice number pattern worksheet for selecting add and subtract rules and predicting the next term.

  • Skill: Choose the operation and step size that generate a number pattern.
  • Learning goal: Test possible rules against a sequence and select the rule that works for every step.
  • Format: Printable PDF worksheet

This number pattern rules worksheet gives Grade 1 Math learners multiple-choice options and asks them to select the add or subtract rule that explains the complete sequence. Several rules can sound plausible until they are tested against every number.

Because the possible rules are printed beside each question, children can focus on comparing and testing. The worksheet finishes by asking for the next term, so the chosen rule must also produce a correct continuation.

How to test each option instead of choosing by appearance

For 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, try the listed rules. Add 1 would produce 13 after 12, so it fails immediately. Add 5 would produce 17. Add 2 creates 14 and continues to work across the row, making it the correct choice.

The same method works for decreasing patterns. In 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, subtract 5 explains every step.

What’s inside the number pattern rules worksheet?

This worksheet contains mainly four types of questions. Which are:

  • Choose one rule from three options for six short patterns.
  • Circle the matching rule after comparing an entire row.
  • Use the pattern to predict the next number.
  • Solve three challenge questions with larger steps and one doubling rule.

Help to use this worksheet in a better way?

Ask two questions: “Are the numbers going up or down?” and “By how much?”. A learner might recognize that 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 changes by 2 but choose add 2. Naming the direction first makes “subtract 2” easier to select.

For a child who needs support, cover two of the options and discuss the remaining rule. Then uncover the choices and compare. For example ask the learner to write a new sequence that follows one unused option.

How to teach number pattern rules topic to grade 1 students?

In the worksheet after the correct choice is circled. pick one wrong rule and ask what sequence it would create instead. If the row begins at 12, “add 5” would give 12, 17, 22, 27. This comparison helps children of grade 1 to understand that a rule is an instruction. It is  not merely a label. It also discourages choosing the option that contains a familiar number without testing it.

The doubling question is an extension

The final row 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 uses “multiply by 2.” It goes beyond the repeated addition and subtraction in the rest of the page. Treat it as an optional puzzle: each number is twice the one before, so the next term is 96. It should not be used as evidence that a child has or has not mastered Grade 1 counting patterns.

Check the Answer of number pattern rules worksheet.

Section 1 rules are add 1, subtract 2, add 5, subtract 1, add 2, and add 2. Section 2 rules are add 2, subtract 5, add 2, and subtract 10. Section 3 next numbers are 6, 20, 0, 18, and 30. The challenge rules and answers are add 3 → 17, subtract 10 → 50, and multiply by 2 → 96.
